Innovation, research and technology

At Galp, we promote innovation and technological development, as well as cooperation and knowledge sharing, which are crucial factors for maximising the value we extract from our portfolio, and also for the sustainability of the Company and of the communities we operate in.

Objectives and goals

  • Investing around €150 m in innovation, research & development by 2020;
  • Managing 22 R&D projects in the E&P segment, including six that focus on CO2 extraction and reuse;
  • Funding around 100 Masters and PhD scholarships by 2020;
  • We will expand the fast-charging network for electric vehicles, reaching a total of 40 fast-charging points by 2020.

What we have already implemented

  • By 2017, we had started and continued a set of projects regarding seven technological programmes within the scope of the exploration and production activity;
  • In the Gas & Power business we launched a new technology platform in Iberia that will increase operational efficiency and improve the customer experience;
  • In the marketing of oil products business, we have opened direct channels of customer relations, including a new mobile application dedicated to retail clients;
  • In refining, we have proceeded with the implementation of innovative projects aimed at improving the resource use efficiency;
  • We created development programmes in R&D in partnership with the scientific and technological system:
    • Doctorate and Masters in Petroleum Engineering (ISPG and Heriot-Watt University);
    • EngIQ business doctoral programme.
  • We promoted relevant studies on the Oil & Gas (O&G) and automotive industry trends.

What we will implement

We plan to implement the following by 2022:

  • Continue to invest in innovation, research and technological development, crucial for the continuous extraction of value from our assets and for the creation of new business models.
  • Promote technological development and encourage knowledge networks through partnerships;
  • Developing R&D programmes in E&P, in research areas such as CO2 capture and reuse and improving the application of technologies in the area;
  • Developing projects that promote Galp's relationship with the scientific and academic systems as, for instance, with the participation of ISPG;
  • Promote initiatives and businesses related to sustainable mobility.
