Second unit in Angola offshore Block 32’s Kaombo project starts production

The second unit installed in less than one year will double the project’s installed capacity to a combined 230,000 barrels of oil and gas. Total recoverable volumes are estimated at around 650 million barrels.

The consortium that is developing Block 32, off the coast of Angola, of which Galp is a partner, has deployed its second FPSO in less than a year at the Kaombo project, doubling total installed capacity to a daily 230,000 barrels of oil and gas.

The unit is located at about 260 kilometers off the coast of Luanda, in water depths ranging from 1,400 to 2,000 metres. It will produce an estimated 115,000 barrels of oil per day at plateau. Total recoverable volumes from the fields are estimated at around 650 million barrels of oil.

The FPSOs will connected to 59 subsea wells and will develop resources from six discoveries made in the central and southern areas of Block 32. The Kaombo Norte FPSO, which produced its first oil in July, will develop the Gengibre, Gindungo and Caril fields, whereas Kaombo Sul comprises Canela, Mostarda and Louro.

The project’s associated gas will be exported to the Angola LNG plant, as part of the consortium commitment to scale its operations to zero routine flaring.

The Kaombo project is a key development for Angola, a core geography for Galp’s production growth where Galp has been present since 1982.

Galp owns a 5% stake in the consortium for the development of Block 32. Total is the operator of the block, holding a 30% interest, with remaining partners being Sonangol P&P (30%), Sonangol Sinopec International 32 Limited (20%) and Esso Exploration & Production Angola (Overseas) Limited (15%).
