Involvement with the Scientific and Technological Community

Investing in new knowledge is vital to the creation of a sustainable, differentiating and innovative culture. We have been developing an R&TD and Innovation strategy based on enhanced cooperation with the Scientific and Technological Community (STC), based on a dynamic network of shared, responsive and constantly developing skills.

Galp has created, together with six of the most prestigious national higher education institutions, the ISPG – Institute of Oil and Gas, an unprecedented initiative in Portugal, which seeks to establish a link between the academic and business worlds, and offers an MSc in Oil Engineering as part of its academic program. The aim of the ISPG is to develop, transfer and disseminate science and technology applied to the energy industry’s activities, especially oil and gas. The goal is to boost the competitiveness of the energy industries through the advanced training of technical staff, and the creation of a cooperation network between companies, higher education institutions and other public and private TR&D and industrial innovation entities.

The first edition of the MSc in Oil Engineering began in 2014, a pioneering initiative in Portugal, developed by ISPG and Galp, together with the Scottish university Heriot-Watt. This university is a world reference center for advanced training and development of E&P solutions, with a strong component of engineering and specialization in this activity segment.

This master's degree seeks to promote the advanced training of technical staff, the development of projects that create added value for the consortia in which Galp is involved, and the creation of a cooperation network between consortia, universities and other research bodies in the Oil and Gas sector.

The EngIQ Business Doctorate aims to train professionals capable of playing a leading role in research, technological development, internal development of technologies, entrepreneurship and leadership in Refining, Petrochemical and Chemical Engineering.

Up to now, the program had the following numbers:

  • 1860 training hours in 2018;
  • 10 EngIQ Business Doctorate completed in nine editions

The Doctorate Programme in Refining, Petrochemical, and Chemical Engineering is defined as a project of excellence at the third level of higher education, strongly oriented to research in a business environment. Developed in close collaboration with Galp and companies of the Petrochemicals, Chemicals and Refining Industries Competitiveness Cluster, the programme is based on proven experience of research and collaboration with the faculty and research industry from the various departments, associated laboratories and tendering research centers.

Five prestigious Portuguese universities are involved in this programme:

This programme aims to have a direct impact on the companies where the trainees work: To that end, Galp has not only welcomed eight doctoral students in a business environment, but also some of its staff has attended the programme at the advanced training level.

In 2018, the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) approved the creation of the NET4CO2 Collaborative Laboratory (CoLAB) (NETwork for a Sustainable CO2 Economy), with the objective of creating a network for a sustainable CO2 economy.

This Laboratory will involve Galp, Instituto Superior Técnico, Faculdade de Engenharia do Porto (FEUP), REQUIMTE (Chemistry and Technology Network), International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) and ChangePartners. The constitution of the Collaborative Laboratory is in progress and its formalization is expected during 2019. This Laboratory will be a private non-profit association founded by six industrial, scientific and academic partners, where the technical capacities and skills of each partner can contribute to the development of new technologies to minimize the impact of CO2 emissions.
