Galp invests in energy efficiency solutions and the production of renewable energy, contributing to a sustainable society.

Our Organisation offers its clients a wide range of services specifically designed to meet the needs of the industry, buildings and transport segments in the national market.

These solutions include:

  • Energy performance contracts implemented using the ESCO (Energy Service Companies) model for Galp clients;
  • Energy implementation projects with over 140 clients.

Integrated energy efficiency type solutions have been created with the objective of adjusting supply to the needs of the various market segments, namely:

1. Energy efficient hotel;

2. Energy efficient parking;

3. Sustainable campus;

4. Energy efficient industry.

1. Energy efficient hotel

The "energy efficient hotel" is an integrated approach to all the energy needs of a hotel. The aim is to identify, define, implement and exploit various economically viable technical solutions and measures.

The main objectives are:

  • to increase energy autonomy and reduce energy costs;
  • to reduce CO2 emissions associated with running a hotel.

The Energy Efficient Hotel concept was implemented at the Corinthia Hotel. This project involved several measures of energy efficiency, namely:

  • reconversion of air-conditioning systems and water heating systems by renovating the thermal power plant;
  • installation of efficient lighting;
  • construction of a solar thermal plant;
  • implementation of cogeneration systems and energy performance management systems.

In 2013, the Corinthia Hotel project was awarded the title of Western Europe Region Energy Project of the Year, by the prestigious AEE. This award is for projects developed and installed outside the US that are notable for the level of performance, innovative features and integration of renewable energy solutions.

The Energy Efficient Hotel concept was also implemented at the Santarém Hotel. The project involved implementing a broad set of energy efficiency measures, which included:

  • installation of Cappotto on the exterior of the building;
  • replacement of air-conditioning systems;
  • installation of efficient lighting;
  • construction of a solar thermal plant; construction of a new thermal plant;
  • indoor pool cover.

This project was based on an energy performance contract that ensures the client's energy consumption is reduced.

This concept has also been extended to other hotel units, with some projects in the start-up phase and others in the detailed engineering phase. There are other cases where the client has opted for direct implementation of the recommended solutions without resorting to the financing structure that Galp offers its clients.

2. The energy-efficient car park

In the context of the promotion of energy efficiency services, and with the aim of adjusting supply to the needs of various market segments, integrated solutions have been developed where technical implementation is economically viable, enabling customers to significantly improve the way they operate.

In 2012, the Chão do Loureiro Park became the first car park in Portugal to obtain the seal of "Energy Efficient Park". The project involved the installation of a lighting and ventilation management system, as well as a photovoltaic solar power plant with a power of 20 kW. A monitoring system for CO2 emissions was also implemented.

As a result of this implementation, the energy balance of the car park was reduced by 50%.

3. Sustainable Campus

In an effort to improve collaboration with the academic world, Galp has created the "Sustainable Campus” concept. The aim is to enable universities to reduce energy consumption in line with the best practices of international university campuses, as well as to stimulate the autonomous production of energy using renewable sources.

Implementation involves running an energy diagnostic specifically designed to provide:

  • a detailed description of the energy consumption structure of the campus;
  • identification of measures to improve energy performance.

Energy efficiency projects were implemented in cooperation with four Portuguese university education institutions: University of Aveiro (UA), University of Beira Interior (UBI), University of Lisbon (UL) and the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST).

The goal was to identify energy efficiency measures to eliminate waste - reducing an energy bill of around €5m. These projects impact a usable area of over 300,000 m2, which includes 100 buildings across all the universities.

In 2014, the Sustainable University Campus Network project received the title of Energy Project of the Year - International, awarded by the prestigious AEE. This award recognises development projects installed outside the US that are notable for their performance level, innovative features and integration of renewable energy solutions.

The project implemented at the University of Lisbon involved the installation of five photovoltaic parks in several faculties of the University of Lisbon: Faculty of Sciences (two plants); Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences and the Cafeteria of the University of Lisbon.

Altogether, almost 4,000 photovoltaic panels were installed, corresponding to an installed capacity of almost 1 MW and an annual output of 1,500 MWh.

The Sustainable Campus projects are designed to be used by the students of these institutions as a living laboratory, where savings and production data have been used repeatedly in preparation of course work, master’s thesis and PhD thesis. In addition, the involvement of students from these institutions, both in the project definition phases and in the implementation phase, is ongoing.

4. Energy-efficient industry

Galp has identified the reduction of energy costs as one of the main concerns of business people, particularly in sectors where these costs represent a significant share of the ESF. Through Energy Solutions, we have been developing tailor-made projects and solutions that enable these companies to become more sustainable and prepared to compete in international markets.

In 2017, Galp, in partnership with Adene, made progress in making available measures and tools that will enable a more effective energy consumption management in relation to compressed air systems in industrial and agricultural companies. Compressed air is a utility with intensive use in some industries and accounts for an average 10-15% of the electric bill. Compressed air systems are considered to have a potential for energy savings which in some cases may reach 30%. This measure intends to test and make known to the market new equipment that promotes the efficient use of this utility with average paybacks of less than three years.

National energy efficiency programme – Consumption management system and equipment implementation

This programme, promoted by Galp and ISA Energy, was aimed at Portuguese SMEs from the industrial sector that used electricity as a source of energy, and its goal was to provide companies with monitoring, management and control tools that enabled them to optimise their electricity consumption and reduce their energy costs.

The industries therefore benefited from the installation of electric meters that allow detailing the energy consumption according to the most representative areas of the Company, supported by an energy management software and technical support within the context of energy efficiency.

In the case of the industry, as for other sectors, solutions recommended by Galp may include an associated financing structure. This option enables clients to use the funds available to implement more efficient production solutions.

LED traffic-lights in Lisbon

In 2016, 20,000 light bulbs were replaced by LEDs at 8,500 traffic-lights in the city of Lisbon.

Galp carried out, in partnership with Lisbon City Council, a project to replace more than 20,000 conventional bulbs in 8,500 traffic-lights with more efficient, lower consumption LEDs.

As a result of this replacement, the council will reduce consumption of electricity by the traffic-lights in the city of Lisbon by almost 95%, a saving of around €850,000 per year.

The implementation and financing of this project was assured by Galp, with both parts agreeing to share the savings over the duration of the contract. Savings are verified by periodic measurement of the actual energy consumption of the equipment, in comparison with the consumption of the replaced equipment. This ensures that the municipality is certain of the savings it is obtaining and of what they are allowed for.
