This weekend, the Galp Foundation reached its target of one million kilometres for the fifth edition of the "Every Step Counts" initiative. The participation of communities in this movement enabled the goal of one million meals for families in need, identified by the Emergency Food Network, to be achieved.
This edition began on the 7th of October and saw the participation of over 60,000 individuals from all districts of mainland Portugal and the autonomous regions, who recorded their kilometres walked, run, or achieved during any form of physical activity. Launched in 2021, the "Every Step Counts" movement has now delivered a total of 4.2 million meals to those most in need.
For this edition, the Galp Foundation also benefited from the involvement of over 30 group participants, including the GNR (National Republican Guard) as well as social and sports partners from local communities where the company operates, such as Alcântara, Alcoutim, Matosinhos, Sines, and Santiago do Cacém. These collective efforts played a pivotal role in achieving the target, contributing with thousands of kilometres.
“By promoting physical activity and raising awareness on the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle, we once again made a difference to those in need. The engagement surrounding this edition confirms the powerful mobilisation of an initiative that is now one of the most cherished and widely supported among the major national campaigns backing the Food Banks,” said Sandra Aparício, Executive Director of the Galp Foundation.
Isabel Jonet, President of the Portuguese Federation of Food Banks and ENTRAJUDA, remarked, “once again, this initiative to support those in need of food assistance, recorded an overwhelming response. It is worth highlighting the mobilisation of thousands of people who logged their steps on the platform, knowing they were contributing to putting food on the table for many families supported by the Emergency Food Network. This partnership has immense social impact. Today, this initiative has earned a reputation that inspires trust among its many participants.”
In addition to the Galp Foundation and the Emergency Food Network, the "Every Step Counts" movement is supported by TVI, Rádio Comercial, and the Cascais City Council. This year, the initiative also received backing from singer Diogo Piçarra, musical duo Calema, and Olympic gymnast Filipa Martins, joined by Mónica Jardim (TVI) and Pedro Ribeiro (Rádio Comercial) as ambassadors.
