Maré do Amanhã Orchestra

Transforming lives through music

Launched in August 2010, the Orquestra Maré do Amanhã (OMA) Project teaches classical music to children and teenagers from one of the most violent favelas in Rio de Janeiro, Complexo da Maré (which represents ~10% of the population of favelas in the city of Rio de Janeiro and one of the most violent).

More than an orchestra, this is a social project that aims to provide real life-changing opportunities. Uniting the energy of classical music with the power of education and local needs for sustainable development, it promotes the creation of education and employment opportunities for young people, moving them away from violence and drug trafficking. By 2023, the project has succeeded in teaching music to more than 4,600 children, adolescents and young people, aged between 4 and 25.

In alignment with our strategic priority of sharing value with local communities, Galp has been a social investor in this project since 2022, becoming a lead investor in 2023, with the aim of supporting and helping the project to grow. Our contribution represents a total investment of €1m.

In 2023, Petrogal Brasil (JV Galp and Sinopec) took the Orquestra Maré do Amanhã (OMA) on a tour of Europe, including concerts and flashmobs in London, Sines, Lisbon, Porto and Cascais.
