Upstream | Galp 103 - AI-Enabled Autonomous Drone Inspections for Offshore Platforms

Galp 103 is developing an autonomous drone inspection system using AI, RGB and thermal imaging to detect corrosion and structural anomalies in offshore platforms.

In partnership with PixForce, the Galp 103 project aims to transform inspection processes in offshore platforms through the deployment of autonomous drones equipped with AI and advanced imaging technologies.

The system integrates drones with RGB cameras, thermal sensors, and AI-based anomaly detection models to automatically identify structural issues such as corrosion, cracks, and other integrity risks in offshore infrastructure.

Traditionally, inspections of offshore structures require manual procedures that can be time-consuming, costly, and potentially hazardous for personnel. By automating these inspections, the project seeks to improve safety, increase inspection efficiency, and provide faster and more accurate maintenance insights.

The collected data is processed using machine learning algorithms capable of detecting anomalies and generating automated inspection reports. Over time, the system will also support predictive maintenance strategies, enabling earlier identification of potential failures and more proactive asset management.

Following successful onshore field tests at Porto de Açu, which validated autonomous flight, data acquisition, and AI-based anomaly detection under real industrial conditions, offshore field campaigns are planned throughout the year to demonstrate the system in operational offshore environments and support its deployment for routine offshore integrity inspections.

Current work focuses on refining the AI detection models and integrating the system with offshore platform operations, paving the way for autonomous inspection capabilities in future maintenance programs.
